£50k allocated for toilets in Laigh Hills

This is a Stirling Council Press Release

More than £750,000 investment to improve public toilets and visitor facilities across Stirling has been agreed.

Councillors gave the green light to fund the investment from car parking income at last week’s meeting (8 Oct) of council.

The two-year programme will focus on improving public toilet facilities in council-owned car parks in the following locations: Aberfoyle, Callander (Station Road), Crianlarich, Killearn, Killin (Station Road), Lochearnhead and Plean Country Park.

The works will support refurbishment and life-cycle works, helping to enhance the condition of these important council assets while improving the quality, accessibility and reliability of facilities for residents and visitors.

Callander Station Road public toilets can receive around 8,500 visits every week, making it one of the busiest facilities in the council area. Essential work to the main water system will progress this year, alongside further lifecycle investment in the internal fabric and services of the building.

Funding of £150,000 has already been committed in this year’s budget to support the development of new public toilet provision in Drymen and Dunblane, where £50,000 has been allocated to support new provision at Laighhills.

Approval was also given to piloting a staffed operating model during the peak tourist season at the public toilets within Callander and Aberfoyle car parks, funded by the car parking reserve.

The package of investment also includes consideration of how Stirling’s car parks can respond to the continued growth in electric vehicle use. Initial assessments have identified opportunities for additional fast and super-rapid EV charging infrastructure at selected locations, particularly where it can support both destination and journey charging.

Stirling Council Leader, Cllr Susan McGill said: “Public toilets are an important part of the infrastructure that supports our communities and our visitors. People rightly expect facilities to be clean, accessible, safe and fit for purpose.

“Our updated condition surveys have given a clearer picture of where investment is needed, allowing us to develop a programme that focuses resources on priority facilities and the locations where they can have the greatest benefit.

“This investment is about more than toilets. We are looking at the wider visitor experience, including accessibility, electric vehicle charging, recycling and appropriate facilities for motorhomes and campervans.”
