Iraq and Afghanistan - what does peace and reconciliation look like? The Rev Scott Brown CBE After ordination as a Church of Scotland Minister, the Rev Scott Brown joined the Royal Navy as Chaplain. In 2007 he was promoted to Principal Chaplain and at the same time was appointed an Honorary Chaplain to the Queen. In November 2010, he was appointed Chaplain of the Fleet, becoming the senior military chaplain in the Royal Navy and accorded the equivalent rank of a Rear Admiral. When he retired after more that 21 years in the Royal Navy, he was awarded a CBE in the 2014 New Year Honours list. He is now minister at Gartmore & Buchlyvie Parish Churches. |

Dunblane Cathedral has a tradition of offering a wide range of educational events which seek to foster enquiry and spiritual growth among members of the Church and the community. Our aim is for programmes to be open and broad in their content and to enable all people to explore and question their own beliefs and understanding. Our latest initiative is to run a series of lectures tied to the seasons and themes of the Christian year. Conflict and Reconciliation... Drawing on the expertise of renowned speakers with a wide spectrum of interests, this inaugural lecture series will explore faith, conflict and reconciliation. We will look at connections between the religious and secular worlds, and how faith and life interact, shape and influence each other. Our speakers bring first hand knowledge and experience of these topics and we are delighted they have agreed to take part in this venture. Dunblane Cathedral is a place of welcome, education and hospitality and these lectures are open to all. We therefore invite you to join us in what promises to be both insightful and thought-provoking. 1 December 2019 - Advent Srebrenica - When neighbours become enemies The Very Rev Dr Lorna Hood OBE After a trip to Srebrenica in 2014 the Very Rev Dr Lorna Hood agreed to set up and Chair the Remembering Srebrenica Scottish Board, now a Scottish charity. She was awarded a ‘Point of Light’ by Prime Minister David Cameron in 2015 for her work with the charity in tackling all forms of intolerance and hatred and in 2017 was awarded an O.B.E. in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. Lorna retired recently after 37 years as a Church of Scotland parish minister. He is now minister at Gartmore & Buchlyvie Parish Churches. 26 April 2020 - Easter Reconciling All Things: Climate Change and Christ The Rev Dr Donald MacEwan The Rev Dr Donald MacEwan is Chaplain at the University of St Andrews. Since 2017 he has been Convener of the Church of Scotland’s Theological Forum. Having studied arts at Aberdeen University, Donald taught English in Japan for 3 years before returning to Scotland to study Divinity at Edinburgh. His PhD in Theology is from Trinity College Dublin. He served as parish minister in St Monans and Largoward for ten years before taking up his present post in 2011, where he has oversight of worship in the University Chapels, pastoral care, and the fostering of interfaith relationships. 27 September 2020 – Harvest The Long Journey from Schism to Unity Out of a history of conflict and division what will it take for our Church to learn peace and unity? The Very Rev Dr John Chalmers A life-long interest in mediation, respectful dialogue & reconciliation has seen the Very Reverend Dr John Chalmers involved in facilitating difficult conversations and working in the complex field of conflict resolution. Most recently he has been working with church leaders in South Sudan as part of a project to address the desperate needs of communities torn apart by civil war. John was ordained as a Church of Scotland minister in 1979 and served in parishes in Renton and Edinburgh. In 2014 / 15 he was Moderator of the General Assembly, was awarded an honorary Doctorate in 2016 and is an Honorary Chaplain to the Queen. |
