On Sunday 12 June Judy Murray hosted a tennis clinic at Cromlix Hotel for children from Cambusbarron Primary (Stirling) and Dunblane Primary (Dunblane). The 7-10 year olds and their teachers took part in fun activities on the court aimed to improve their ball skills and help them learn more about tennis.

Commenting on the afternoon, Judy Murray said: "It was wonderful to see lots of local schoolchildren and their parents getting a first taste of tennis on the court at Cromlix. Our Family Fun Days are all about showing mums and dads how to get their kids started with fun and doable bat and ball skills that can be played in whatever space is available. Making tennis accessible is so important to me and I hope that many of them continue to play over the Summer months".

In January 2019, local sports historian, Andy Mitchell, gave a talk to Dunblane Local History Society about the town's fantastic sporting heritage

Today, of course, Dunblane has a great sporting hall of fame. One immediately thinks of Andy and Jamie Murray, who have brought considerable prestige to the town, but there are many other sporting giants among us. To name just a few:

  * Fiona Brown and Frankie Brown could be part of the Scotland women’s football squad at the World Cup this summer
  * Louise Martin (made a Dame in the recent honours list) is president of the Commonwealth Games Federation
  * Elaine Hopley rowed across the Atlantic in record time
  * Callum Davidson, now coaching, played for Scotland at football, having also represented Scotland at golf and tennis as a boy
  * Grant McPherson was an ice hockey ace

That list could easily be added to.

Yet there was a time when sport was even more of an integral part of life here.

Dunblane offered an extraordinary range of sporting opportunities in the 19th century. Despite the town population being less than a third of what it is now, there were clubs for curling, bowling, football, golf, cricket, quoiting, cycling and angling. There were annual sports meetings each summer, shooting competitions for the Volunteers, and Dunblane Hydro boasted a tennis court and a croquet lawn.

Click here to download a pdf of Andy's talk about those sporting activities, as he attempted to explain why Dunblane had such a vibrant athletic culture, and reveal that some of our Victorian sporting heritage is still with us, even though you may not have noticed it.

Dunblane Sports Club celebrated the opening of their new squash courts on Sunday 18th August by hosting the latest event in the Scottish Squash Roadshow. Scotland’s number 2 and world ranked number 79 Alison Thomson teamed up with National Coach Paul Bell to deliver coaching sessions for juniors and adults, followed by an exhibition match and a chance for club members to ‘play against the pros’.

The courts have been given a complete £30k rebuild, including new state of the art ASB walls, new Junckers sprung flooring and new lighting. The investment comes alongside increased popularity in squash, with busy club nights, team practice sessions, ladies and men’s teams in local leagues, and a popular internal box league and ladder. The new courts have been sponsored by Erskine Eyecare, who have branches in Auchterarder, Bridge of Allan and Dunblane.

Scottish star Alison said she had a “great day getting on the new courts with the juniors and adults”. Paul praised the club for investing in their facilities and promoting squash to the local community: “It was so much fun in Dunblane on our latest Scottish Squash Roadshow. It was a nice challenge delivering a session for 12 adults on 2 courts of various abilities, but that’s why we do it. When there’s a will there’s a way.”

New members are always welcome. For more more information on the club, and how to join, please see the website: www.dunblanesportsclub.co.uk. Junior coaching starts on Saturday 7th September for children P4 and above. Cost of 5 week session is £25 for members and £35 for non-members. Rackets are provided.
