Old Newton is described in the Scottish history books as a 16th century L-plan fortalice, although there is evidence for some sort of building on the site from the Exchequer Rolls of Scotland in 1435. The house was built for defence and therefore only recently, in the 18th and 19th centuries, were the rooms on the ground floor developed for domestic use. All bedrooms were upstairs many of them steep.

It has welcomed some of Scotland's most illustrious guests including Prince Charles Edward Stuart, the enlightenment philosopher David Hume, and Sir Walter Scott who wrote The Lady of the Lake here. More recently it has been home to the cast and crew of Outlander the popular series written by Diana Gabaldon, who also came to visit. New guests will recognise the many scenes from the first series that were filmed here.
