Update on New Bridge at Rail Station

Stirling Observer Article 1 August 2013

Access for All is a ten-year programme by Network Rail to improve accessibility at train stations nationwide by installing lifts and ramps.

Plans have been drawn up for major improvements at Dunblane which will see the removal of the ‘blue bridge’ and in its place, a new bridge, together with three lift towers.

The present Victorian bridge, which is listed, is not high enough to accommodate the wires required when the line is electrified. It also needs to be maintained and Network Rail say they cannot afford to maintain two footbridges especially as this would create a precedent across the network.

They are yet to make a final decision.

If the bridge is to be removed then this would be done once the new bridge and lifts were in place. Therefore for a short time both bridges would be in place. The old bridge would then go to a railway preservation society.

If the bridge is to be kept then it would be removed eventually when electrification takes place.

Work has to be completed by April 2014 and Network Rail will shortly be submitting their plans to Stirling Council. These will also be on display at an information meeting to be held probably at the Victoria Halls in a couple of weeks after plans have been submitted. Any comments you may have will have to be submitted to Stirling Council as part of the planning process.

UPDATE (30 July): An informal community drop-in will be held in the Victoria Hall from 3-7pm on Thursday 15 August. Everyone is welcome to come along.
