Dunblane golfer Sean McCormack has qualified for the final of the American Golf U.K. Long Drive Championship following a hugely impressive drive of 387 yards in the Over 45 category regional qualifier. This achievement leaves the big hitting veteran top of the Over 45 qualifying distances and hot favourite to take the title along with a place in the World Championships in the U.S.

McCormack was one of over 5000 budding long drivers who entered the event that is run by nationwide golf retailer American Golf. He won his first stage qualifying event at his local American Golf store in February, progressing to regional qualifying where he sent out a 387 yard monster to secure a spot in the final. McCormack now lines up against the best long drivers in the U.K at Heythrop Park in Oxfordshire on 4th August, where he will battle it out for the national title and the only U.K. Over 45 qualifying spot for the World Championships in Oklahoma.

After securing qualification McCormack commented, “I’m really pleased to have qualified for the final and to have done so as top qualifier is a great boost. But there’s a lot of competition in the Over 45 category so I know I’ll have to perform to my best. I’ll be working hard for the next few months and know if I can take this form forward I’m in with a good chance of taking the title and qualifying to take on the world’s best in the U.S.”

After watching qualifying come to a close at the American Golf Manchester Golf Show, Daniel Gathercole, Director of Marketing and Communications at American Golf commented, “The standard of qualifying this year has been amazing. To make the final from over 5000 entrants is an incredible achievement. This Championship really has brought together every type of golfer, from professionals to big hitting club golfers, and we can’t wait to find our 3 Champions who’ll go on to represent the U.K. and American Golf at the World Championships.”

The 2017 Under 45, Over 45 and Ladies finals will be shown on Sky Sports. Spectator entry to the final will be completely free and all are welcome. The Long Drive Championship is one part of American Golf’s drive to get more people hitting more balls and for 2017 those balls have been going a very long way!

Stirling Council has commissioned Amey to develop plans for the area around the Cathedral up to the Braeport Centre.  These proposals were presented to the community on 29 April 2017. The presentation has now been posted on the Stirling Council website along with an on-line form to get feedback from the community:

The Stirling Council questionnaire/feedback form closes on Monday 21 May 2017.

The Community Council would like to hear your views on the 20mph members bill in the Scottish Parliament, submitted by Mark Ruskell (Green Party). The full consultation document can be downloaded from the Scottish Parliament Website here.

The bill proposes reducing the default speed limit on restricted roads from 30mph to 20mph, whilst giving local councils the power to retain specific streets as 30mph zones where suitable, e.g. as designated through routes. Whilst many communities have already benefited from being reclassified as 20mph zones, the approach in Scotland to date has been piecemeal, resulting in some local councils having no permanent 20mph zones in place at all.

Elaine Hopley, 45, from Dunblane in Scotland, arrived in Antigua on Sunday having spent nearly two months at sea competing in the 2,000 mile Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. Her time of 59 days, 19 hours and 14 minutes makes her the fastest woman to cross the Atlantic solo in the 30-year history of the race, dubbed the world’s toughest row.
