Disruptive Railways Works for up to 3 months

Letter to Community Council From Network Rail

Perth Road Railway Bridge - Track Lowering

Network Rail will be undertaking in the area throughout May and potentially into July 2014.

We will be lowering the track under the bridge at Perth Road south of the station in order to create safe clearance for the overhead cables associated with the future electrification of central Scotland’s railway. The equipment we use and the nature of this work means some disturbance is unavoidable, but we will make every effort to minimise any unnecessary noise. Those working on site are briefed on working responsibly in the local community, particularly when working at night.

The work will involve cutting and lifting track sections, removing ballast and excavation of the track bed to lower. The process will then be reversed to reinstate the track. A tamping machine will then pass over the reinstated rail to ensure the stability of the newly installed sections.

We will be working from a site compound on private land to the south of the bridge and the work will be largely contained within the railway corridor. There are no additional vehicle movements by road associated with this work.

These improvements are an essential aspect of our strategy to provide a safe, reliable and efficient railway fit for the 21st century and will improve capacity and reliability of the railway.

There will be some activities in preparation for the main disruptive works from the 3rd until the 16th of May, though the main work to lower the track will be over three consecutive weekends.

Saturday 3rd May to Friday 16th May  Night shift work 1am – 5 am (Sundays 9am)

Monday 5th to Friday 9th May  Compound setup  Day shift working 7am to 5pm

  Friday 16th May 11pm to Monday 19th May 6am  Continuous 24hr working

  Friday 23rd May 11pm to Monday 26th May 6am  Continuous 24hr working

  Friday 30th May 11pm to Monday 2nd June 6am  Continuous 24hr working

There will also be additional ‘tamping’ of the new track sections overnight on both the 1st and 8th June. There may be a requirement to undertake additional works. The dates identified for this are:-

From 1am to 5am on Tuesday 1st and Wednesday 2nd July and

From 1am to 5am on Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th July.

We will be sending out approximately 1,100 letters to properties and businesses in the area on Wednesday 7th June advising people of the work and providing contact details should they have issues throughout the work.

Under our licence conditions we are contractually obliged to work, whenever possible, at times that cause the least disruption to train services -which means carrying out a lot of our improvements during the night and at weekends. Work of this type can only be carried out when trains are not running as it involves the removal of significant sections of track.

I will inform you of any updates, but if you would like to follow the progress of the work you can do so by following our twitter page @NetworkRailEGIP.
